Jefferson City: A Legacy of memories Jefferson City is located on the Missouri River and was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. It was formed exclusively to serve as the state capital by a commission appointed by the Missouri state legislature in 1821.
Major Attractions:
Museum of Missouri Military History: This museum encloses several Missouri-war memorabilia from wars such as the Mexican War, Civil War, and World War I and II.
Missouri State Capitol: Located in the state capital of Jefferson City at 201 West Capitol Avenue it is a home to two museums as well as the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri Senate. It is famous for its architectural features which include a 30-foot-wide grand stairway and its bronze front doors. The Missouri State Museum is the third state Capitol building housing a History Hall and a Resource Hall.
Missouri Governor's Mansion: This mansion was constructed in 1871 as the official residence of Missouri's first family. Guided tours of the first floor are offered, reservations being made at least 24 hours in advance.
The Jefferson Landing State Historic Site: It is a complex of three historic buildings: the Christopher Maus House, the Lohman Building, and the Union Hotel.
The Runge Conservation Nature Center: The center offers hands-on exhibits of Missouri wildlife habitats, and features a 2,400-gallon fish aquarium containing home-grown fish.
Missouri Veterinary Medical Museum: It is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to veterinary medicine. More than 3,500 veterinary artifacts and instruments can be viewed at this museum along with old diaries and sample drug cases.
Cole County Historical Museum: The museum is packed with the riches of historical importance dating from the period of the Louisiana Territory. The rooms contain antique chandeliers, rosewood and mahogany coffers and futons, French mirrors and fine paintings. It also houses a collection of the states First Ladies inaugural gowns.
Carnahan Memorial Gardens: Located next to the Governor's Mansion it was constructed in the late 1930s and was renamed in 2001 as the Carnahan Memorial Garden after the death of Governor Mel Carnahan. The gardens are crammed with flowers, pools, and walkways.
St. Louis Zoo: It features an extensive assortment of animals from all over the world. Its entrance is just off Hampton Avenue in Forest Park. The brittle forest exhibit presents visitors a stupendous look at atypical primates in a virtual accepted environment.
Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial: It is dedicated to the Missouri law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The commemorative inscriptions on its walls contain the name of the officer, his or her position, their city or town and the date he or she died.
