Delaware indians
The Delaware Indians are the people, who are considered as the grandfathers of several Algonquian tribes and are oldest creatures in the Algonquian nation. They are also sometimes called as the Lenape. Initially, these groups of people were used to live along the banks of river Delaware in New Jersey and accordingly they became familiar as Delaware Indians. The river Delaware, which has greatly affected evolution and lifestyles of the Lenape family, got her unique name from the name of Lord de la Warr, governor of Jamestown colony.
Delaware Indians Met With The Europeans
Traditionally, the members of Delaware Indians community do call themselves as Lenape, read len-NAH-pay, meaning 'the People\\'. It is believed that the Europeans had first met these tribes in around 1600s. Delaware Indians do enjoy higher freedom and superiority amongst the neighboring tribal communities. With time, they have become role models for the other tribes. Though, they have learnt civic rules of living and live peacefully with the civilized humanism and other rude tribes, but at the same time, they have not forgotten their sternness and stubbornness of fighting- the primitive nature of any tribal community !
Before any foreigners had visited them, the Delaware Indians had no idea of land ownerships. Selling of lands was beyond their imaginations. They never thought that the visiting Europeans might capture their piece of lands one day. They actually had allowed the early visitors to enjoy their lands on lease basis. But, when they understood their grave mistake, they gave a stiff fight recovering their lost faith. But, the Europeans were well prepared and did not allow them to succeed. Consequently, the ancestors of today's Delaware Indians were forced to move out to westward leaving their primitive positions. Gradually this tribal community become disintegrated and got spread around Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and then Kansas before finally resettling at today's Oklahoma - the Indian Territory.
Delaware Indians: Language
The Delaware Indians are closely related to the Shawnee Indians, Miami Indians and Ottawa Indians. All of them used to speak the same language and that is the Algonquian language. The native form of Lenape Delaware language is no more practiced anywhere ; however, the present generations of Delaware Indians are trying to revive their old ancient language heritages.
