Norwood MA

Norwood is a town in the state of Massachusetts, U.S.A. Its situated in the Norfolk County of Massachusetts.

History:

The area we now know as norwood was first settled in 1678 by a man named Ezra Morse. (He set up a sawmill in the area now known as South Norwood, the part of town where the first concentration of families - most of whom were farmers - migrated to over the next half-century).

The area went on to become part of the town of Dedham in Massachusetts. But it separated and was officially formed in the year 1872 as the town of Norwood (was also referred to as the mother of towns, since fourteen of the present communities of eastern Massachusetts were situated within its original borders back then)

Geogrpahy:

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town consists of a total area of around 27.3 km. While 27.1 km of it is land, 0.2 km of it is said to be water.

Businesses:

Norwood is home to the head office of Analog Devices, Inc. a reputed American multinational manufacturer of semiconductor devices.

There is an impressively huge collection of automobile dealerships located on the U.S. Route 1 highway, known as the norwood Automile. This was mostly the work of the late Ernie Boch, who came up with the concept of having several competing dealerships unite together to advertise the Automile as a true shopping center for automobiles. As a matter of fact, the chain of Boch dealerships is home to (as of March, 2005) the world's largest Honda dealership.

Education:

Norwood is home five public elementary schools Balch, C.M. Callahan, F.A. Cleveland, C.J. Prescott and Oldham (all of them kindergarten through 5th grade). And as far as public middle and high schools are concerned, there is the Dr. Philip O. Coakley middle school (formerly known as norwood junior high school) and Norwood senior high school (NHS). The high schools mascot is the Mustangs and its colors are gold and blue. Their sports include baseball, basketball, football, field hockey, soccer, tennis, track and field, ice hockey, volleyball, wrestling, lacrosse and even cross-country. The schools music program is considered to be one of the best in the country. As a matter of fact, the NHS Jazz Ensemble went on to win the national high school championship in the year 2000.

There are also some private schools available in Norwood, such as the St. Catherine Of Siena elementary school (preschool to 8th grade) and the Living Waters Christian Academy (preschool to 6th grade).

Lankmarks:

Norwood's town square is dominated by its town hall the norwood Memorial Municipal Building. It has a 51-bell carillon (a group of at least 23 bronze, cup-shaped bells that are set in sequence so that it produces a harmonious melody when many bells are sounded together) tower that includes the Walter F. Tilton Memorial Carillon, one of the nine carillons in the state of Massachusetts and also the seventh largest in the U.S.A. Transportation:

The U.S. Route 1 (also called U.S. Highway 1) is a major highway that runs through Norwood. Theres also the Interstate 95, an interstate highway that runs along the east coast of U.S.A.

There are also three MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) commuter rail stations located on the Franklin Line, which travels to several stops (such as Forge Park/495, Franklin/Dean College, Norfolk, Walpole, Plimptonville, Windsor Gardens, Norwood Central, norwood Depot, Islingon, Dedham Corporate Center/128, Endicott, Readville, Hyde Park, Ruggles, Back Bay and South Station).
