Lasik vision correction new york
Now people have optical options in New York as well as rest of the world! We are not speaking about the new fashion in eye-glasses frames but to get rid of eye-glasses, altogether! Of course, the treatment is not without limitations. And it is not available for all. To start with, there is an age limit for such operations called Lasik Eye Operations. Then, there is a certain "minimum" number or power of the eyesight to make you suitable for the lasik treatment or eye-operation. This means that anyone using a minimal or small power eye-glasses can not or rather should not go for a lasik eye-operation.
LASIK stands for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis."
Why is lasik so popular LASIK has advantages over other procedures like comparatively lack of pain afterward and good vision is usually acheived the very next day!
Before making a final decision on lasik surgery, it is good to know what other treatment options are available and what their person profit may be. Today, there are other refractive surgeries (surgeries to correct eyesight) are available besides lasik eye surgery to treat common refractive errors.
The Procedure of lasik operation:
1. A surgical device cuts a top flap/layer of thin corneal tissue off the outer layer of the eyeball(cornea) and the flap is lifted out of the way.
2. The laser beam/rays reshape the underlying corneal tissue, and the surgeon replaces the flap, which quickly sticks to the eyeball. There are no stitches.
3.A shield - either plastic or porous metal is placed over the eye to protect the flap.
I have myself been operated for lasik surgery, 4 years ago, in India. It was at the most reputed L.V.Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. With personal experience, I can say this:
My eyesight before surgery was -8!! i.e. myopia or shortsightedness meaning I could not see far off objects clearly. I was an ideal case for the surgery as I was 26 years old(meeting the age criteria, neither too small nor too old for the surgery). Plus my eyesight was huge i.e. above 5 points which makes such a surgery worthwhile. The only shortcoming (which I did not take seriously then as I was too excited to get rid of my super-thick glasses!) was that the content of water(natural tears) in my eyes was below normal. This means that the possibility of "dry-eyes" after the operation was more in my case. My doctor informed me about this. But as I was an adult, I could take the risk of going ahead with the operation, anyways. So, with dreamy eyes! I agreed for the surgery. All went well with the operation. I returned to work(at a call center) after 2 weeks rest. I enjoye d -0.5 eyesight for 2-3 months, which was a mild disappointment from my original expectation of No More Spectacles, but I was happy nonetheless as these glasses were much thinner! However, as time passed my eyes strained to see with the -0.5 power glasses and I had to start wearing -1.0 power glasses. During the past 4 years, my eyesight has finally now, stabilised at -3.0. I am in no way trying to discourage anyone planning to undergo such operation as mine is rare case around 2%. I do insist that "eye-moisture" or "natural-tears" should be seriously checked and considered before taking up lasik surgery, as it effects the eyes a lot in the long run.
Another change in my eyes, after the operation over some years is this, now my eyes have become too sensitive to sunlight. I wear sunglasses even on breezy days!!. The extra sensitivity applies to electric light from home tubelight, computer screen being very bright, too.
Pricing:
The current rates of lasik eye surgery are nearly $400 per eye.
While we insist on being optimistic and cheerful before any surgical operation, it is useful to know the number of times and different ways in which medical science has failed. This is for our awareness and preparation for the bad and not just good results.
A 31 year old man who underwent LASIK, was faced with fleshy conjunctival (plical) tumor in the left eye. This state is also called Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia.
Other risks and complications possible after Lasik eye operation are:-
Over or under correction. These problems can often be improved with glasses, contact lenses and enhancements.
Corneal scarring, irregular astigmatism(blurred vision) and an inability to wear contact lenses.
corneal infection:
"Loss of best corrected visual acuity" -- meaning that you would not be able to see as well after surgery, even with glasses or contacts, as you did with glasses or contacts before surgery.
A decrease in contrast senstivity, "crispness" or sharpness. It means that even though you may have a 20/20 vision, objects may appear fuzzy or grayish.
Problems with night driving, which may require glasses.
Flap problems like irregular flaps, incomplete flaps, flaps cut off entirely and ingrowth of cells under the flap.
Side-effects:
The following side-effects are possible, but usually disappear ovwr time. In rare situations(like mine!!), they may be permanent.
discomfort or pain.
hazy or blurry vision.
scratchiness.
dryness.
glare.
Haloes or starbursts around lights.
Light senstivity.
Small pink or red patches on the white of the eye.
Alternatives to LASIK:
You can discuss other surgical alternatives to Lasik with your eye doctor like:-
a) Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), which is a laser procedure used to reduce myopia(shortsightedness), hyperopia(farsightedness) and astigmatism(blurred vision).
b) Astigmatic keratotomy (AK), is an incisional(cutting) procedure to reduce astigmatism(blurred vision).
c) Intrastromal corneal rings are clear, thin, polymer inlays(layers put inside) placed on the eye to correct low myopia(shortsightedness) only.
