The Caralhûnan were first created by Michael S. Repton in October 2003 but the letters did not take on their final shapes until 2005. The script is attached to Michael's created language Arêndron, and the name is Arêndron for "Thirty Runes", from the number of consonant letters in the alphabet (The vowels were a later addition).
