Name the language

Here’s a text in a mystery language. Any ideas which language it is?

Fy vor or er i Chimeri.
Halaght vara nam dit.
La Konungdum din cumma.
La vill din vera guerde
i vrildin sin da er i chimeri.
Gav vus dagh u dagloght brau.
Forgive sindorwara sin vi forgiva gem ao sinda gainst wus.
Lia wus ikè o vera tempa, but delivra wus fro adlu idlu.
For do i ir Kongungdum, u puri, u glori, Amen

  1. It’s the lord’s prayer in some Germanic language. And a quick google-search will tell you which one it is…

  2. The Scandinavian bits leap out at me, as well as it sounding a bit like Latin in places (‘vera tempa’).

    … now i’ve Googled it to see which it is, that’s pretty cool! I love to see how all our languages are connected. Pretty cool too, how some of the lines above spoken out loud can almost be understood in English.

  3. It looks Scandinavian, but it’s neither of Norwegian, Danish, or Swedish. I don’t know about Icelandic, but it doesn’t look like that either (AFAIK Icelandic has no W). Maybe some historical text?

  4. that is the “our father” in Norn an extinct norse language spoken in the northern islands of shetland and orkney, it’s closely related to faroese and old norse.

  6. well…, i think it’s gonna be switzerland. coz it sounds a little bit like english.

  7. Without looking: It is the Lord’s Prayer in, I’m guessing either an English and Spanish based creole, or some Germanic and Romance constructed language.

    and The text it isn’t Swedish, Danish, Faroese, Icelandic, German, Frisian, Norwegian (bokmal, nynorks, old norse), nor Finnish (which it isn’t a Germanic language, but Ugric).
    The text is a colang, mixing, Scandinavian, English, Italian. Maybe is a slang on Finnish-Swedish, spoken by immigrants.

  14. The language is indeed Shetland Norn, a form of Old Norse spoken in Shetland until about the 18th century, and it is the Lord’s Prayer. The text comes from wikipedia

  15. Oh poo! If I’d been more on the ball I’d have got in before Simon gave the answer – for some reason I was reading about Norn on Wikipedia on Friday and recognised it from reading that.
