Barein is an East Chadic language spoken in southern Chad by about 6,000 people, particularly in Bahr Signaka department of the Melfi subprefecture in the Guéra region. The main dialects of Barein are Jalkia, Komi and Sakaya. As there is little mutual intelligibility between the dialects, Arabic is used by speakers of different dialects to communicate with each other.
Barein is also known as Baraïn, Barayin, Guilia, Jalkia or Jalkiya.

Barein is a tonal language with three main tones: high, mid and low. The high tone is indicated by an acute accent (á), the mid tone with a macron (ā), and the low tone is indicated with a grave accent (à).
