Carib is a Cariban language spoken by 8,558 people mainly in Venezuela, French Guiana and Suriname, and also in Guyana and Brazil. In 2001 there were 4,450 speakers of Carib in Venezuela and 1,200 speakers in Suriname. In 2012 about 2,400 people in French Guiana spoke Carib, and there were 480 speakers of Carib in Guyana.
In Venezuela the language is Bolívar, Monagas and Delta Amacuro states. In French Guinana Carib is spoken on the northwest coast and along the Mana and Maroni rivers. In Suriname it is spoken in the districts of Coronie, Marowijne, Para, Saramacca and Sipaliwini. In Guyana there are Carib speakers in Barima-Waini and Pomeroon-Supenaam regions.
Carib is also known as Caribe, Cariña, Galibi, Kalihna, Kalinya, Kari’ña, Kariña.
