Chayahuita (Paranapura / Shawi)

Chayahuita is a Cahuapanan language spoken in the department of Loreto in the north of Peru, mainly along the Sillay, Cahuapanas and Panapura rivers and their tributaries in the province of Alto Amazonas. In 2007 there were about 7,900 speakers of Chayahuita.

In some areas there is bilingual education in Chayahuita and Spanish and most Chayahuita-speaking parents pass their language on to their children, although some only speak Spanish with their children.
