Koyukon (Denaakk'e)

Koyukon is a Northern Athabaskan language spoken along the Koyukuk and Yukon Rivers in western interior Alaska. In 2007 there were about 300 speakers, most of whom were older adults. The language is also known as Denaakkenaageʼ, Dinaak̲'a or Ten'a.

Koyukon was first documented between 1899 and 1927 by Jules Jetté, a French Canadian Jesuit missionary, who became fluent in the language and wrote about the Koyukon language, and the culture and beliefs of the speakers.

In the 1970s, Jetté's notes were used by Eliza Jones to start working on the Koyukon Athabaskan Dictionary. This was edited by James Kari and published in 2000 by the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The dictionary includes information about Koyukon culture and traditions, and also traditional stories.
