Maricopa is a Yuman language spoken in Maricopa County in southern Arizona in the USA, mainly in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Gila River Indian Community. According to the 2015 census, there are 35 native speakers of Maricopa, and other people who speak and/or understand the language to some extent. The language is no longer passed on to children, and at Salt River most speakers are elderly.
Maricopa is also known as Piipaash, which means "the people". There are two dialects: Piipaash, and Xalychidom. Piipassh is spoken mainly at Gila River, and Xalychidom is spoken at Salt River. It is closely related to Quechan, Mojave, and more distantly related to Cocopah, Kumeyaay and Paipai.
The O'odham Piipaash Language Program aims to revitalize the language with language classes, cultural arts classes, language-based social activities, and other activities. They have also developed an orthography for the language.
Stress falls on the last syllable of the root word.
