Mbunda is a Bantu language spoken by about 218,000 people in Angola and Zambia. In Angola it is considered a national language and is spoken by about 135,000 people in the province of Moxico in the southwest of the country. There are also about 83,000 speakers of Mbunda in the North-Western province of Zambia.
Mbunda is also known as Chimbunda, Ki-mbunda, Kimbunda, Gimbunda, Mbúùnda or Mbuunda. Mbunda speakers call it Chimbúùnda. It is closely related to Luchazi.
An alphabet for Mbunda was approved in 1987. The language is taught in some schools in Angola.
