Okinoerabu (島ムニ)

Okinoerabu is a Northern Ryukyuan language spoken on Okinoerabu Island (沖永良部島) in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. In 2004 there were about 3,200 speakers of Okinoerabu, most of whom are adults. Younger people are shifting to Japanese.

There are to groups of Okinoerabua dialects: Eastern Okinoerabu and Western Okinoerabu. The language is also known as Oki-no-Erabu or Shimamuni, and Okinoerabu Island is known as イィラブ (Yirabu) in Okinoerabua.
