Thakali (थकाली)

Thakali is member of the Tamangic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken mainly in the Kali Gandaki River valley in the Myagdi and Mustang districts of the Dhaulagiri Zone in central Nepal. In 2001 there were 5,900 speakers of Thakali.

Thakali is also known as Barhagaule, Tapaang, Thaksya, Panchgaunle or Thāksy. Dialects include Turkuche, Marpha, Syang and Seke. Seke is sometimes considered a separate language and has its own dialects: Tangbe, Tetang and, Chuksang. It is spoken by 700 people: 600 in Nepal and 100 in New York City.

Thakali is taught in primary schools and used in literature. It is spoken mainly by adults, except in Tukuche, where younger people also speak it.

Transliteration

Hỵom mihcā nahw lāhṅn swatantrate mahiku adhikārrī preppre ta. Thamac ā wiwek te mahnwa samace yukta taciw ta. Bhātritwae samkinsi ṭihce sotwapre keh kihmjan lalamyāṅ

Translation

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
