Tiipai (Tiipay)

Tiipai is a Yuman-Cochimí language spoken in San Diego county in southern California in the USA, and also in Baja California state in northern Mexico. In 2007 there were about 100 speakers of Tiipai in the USA, and there were 34 Tiipai speakers in Mexico in 2012.

Tiipai is also known Southern Diegueño, Southern Kumeyaay or Jamul Tiipay. It is closely related to the Kumeyaay and Ipai languages. These languages were formerly classified a dialects of the Diegueño language by linguists, but are now seen as distinct languages. Speakers of these languages see them as mutually intelligible variants of one language.
