Western Subanon (Sinubanon)

Western Subanon is a member of the Subanen branch of the Philippine language family. It is spoken by about 150,000 people in the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay on the Zamboanga Peninsula in the Mindanao region in the south of the Philippines. In particular it is spoken in the villages of Malayal, Lintangan, Lanuti, and Limpapa, which are part of the Municipality of Sibuco, and also in parts of the municipalities of Siocon, Baliguian, Labason, Surabay and Ipil.

Western Subanon is also known as Siocon Subanon or Subano. Native speakers call it Sinubanon.

The language is spoken mostly adults. Since 2012 efforts have been made to encourage younger people to learn and use the language. There are workshops focusing on the language and culture, and a dictionary and other materials to teach literacy are being produced.

Translation (Let's Plant)

Planting in the morning
Until the afternoon
Do it during the day time
Let’s plant

When the work is finished
We can now rest
And so, we’ll rejoice
Because there is something to harvest

We will harvest
We will harvest
Great is our rejoicing
Because we will harvest
We will harvest
We will harvest
Our suffering will not last long
We will harvest
