Choápam Zapotec is a member of the Zapotecan branch of the Oto-Manguean language family. It is spoken by about 12,000 people in southern Mexico, particularly in Comaltepec in the northeast of Oaxaca state, and in Arena and Playa Vincente in Verzcruz state. The majority of Choápam Zapotec speakers are adults. Some children also speak the language.

Stress normally falls on the penultimate syllable. If it falls elsewhere, an acute accent (á) is used to indicate it.

Cuando venía traía el dinero en bolsas. Entonces el compadre fue a ver a su compadre a su casa. Cuando él llegó a la casa de su compadre, platicaron de su situación, que él no tenía dinero.
