5 Language Apps for the iPhone

by Christine Kane

Learning a new language is a task that can be quite daunting at times, especially given that most of us today exist with fast-paced and jam-packed schedules. But just because you don't have time to sit down and pore through books every night doesn't mean that you don't have time to learn a new language. All you need is to download some handy apps and your iPhone and you'll be well on your way to learning a new language in no time.

1. Google Translate

This popular app powered by Google allows you translate over 50 different languages using words or phrases. It also lets you translate via text for 58 languages, by voice for 15, and lets you listen to your translations spoken aloud in 23 languages. Another useful feature is that you can also access your translation history offline, something handy when you're out of range for internet service.

Available for and iPhone and Android

2. Babel

This is an application you can download that helps you expand your grammar and vocabulary in 11 different languages - English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Swedish, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish, Indonesian, and Dutch - through the use of pronunciation training and a review manager. The app will also sync up with the Babel.com website to help track your progress.

3. AccelaStudy

You can use AccelaStudy with 17 different languages that contain a very widespread vocabulary of words falling into 65 different categories. It also offers several different venues to learn a foreign language - utilizing flashcards, repetition, statistics, and quizzes.

4. My Language Free Translator

Covering 59 different languages, this app has one of the most extensive translation lists around. It also has an interface that is extremely easy to navigate around and you have the option of using the app to email translations, which is a nifty and handy little tool.

5. World Nomads

This is another awesome application you can download that covers 23 different languages and provides the user with several different categories of words and phrases where you can listen to a native speaker pronounce the words and phrases. Learning a new language doesn't have to be overwhelming, even when you're short on time. By downloading an app to your phone you open up the possibility of learning a new language at any time, whether you're in the car or walking to a meeting. You can sneak in mini language sessions throughout the day, turning something that was once overwhelming into short, manageable bursts of studying and learning. And the best part about all of these apps? They're free. And you can't beat free!
