Kakwa is spoken by about 250 people mailny in the southeast of Colombia, and also in the Amazonas region in the northwest of Brazil. In particular, it is spoken in Wacara in the Vaupes Department of Colombia, and in Nuevo Pueblo in the same area. It beloings to the Nukak-Kakwa branch of the proposed Puniave-Maku language family.
Kakwa is also known as Bára, Cakua, Kákwa, Macu de Cubeo, Macu de Desano, Macu de Guanano, Macú-Paraná, Wacara. Dialects include Vaupés Cacua and Macú-Paraná Cacua. Native speakers call their language and themselves Kãkwã. It is closely related to Nukak, which is spoken in nearby, and is considered a dialect of Nukak by some linguists.
