Maonan is a member of the Kam-Sui branch of the Kra-Dai language family. It has about 30,000 speakers in southern China, particularly in the Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County in the north of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and also in Nandan, Hechi, Tian'e, Yishan, Luocheng and Rong'an counties, in Yizhou District and in Du'an Yao Autonomous County in Guangxi, and in Libo and Pingtang counties in the south of Guizhou Province.
A way to write Maonan with the Latin alphabet was devised in 2010. It is used mainly by some Maonan intellectuals. There is also a way to write Maonan based on Chinese characaters that is used for religious scriptures and can only be read by shamans.
