Teda is a member is of the Western Saharan branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. It is spoken by about 130,000 Teda people in Chad, Libya and Niger. It is spoken particularly in the Borkou, Ennedi-Ouest, Tibesti and Kanem regions in northern and western Chad, in the Murzuk District of the Fezzan region in southwestern Libya, and in the Agadez Region in northern Niger.
Teda is also known as Tedaga, Todaga, Todga, Tudaga, Toubou. It is closely related to Daza, which is spoken in southeastern Niger and western Chad. The two languages are classified as varities of Tebu in some sources.
Teda is written with the Latin alphabet, and there appear to be several spelling systems. Teda was given official status in Libya in 2013, however the law was not enforced until 2019, when Teda started to be taught in schools.
