u̠t-Ma'in is a member of the Northwest Kainji branch of the Benue-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 36,000 people in the northwest of Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi State and Sokoto State, and also in Niger State and Zamfara state. Few u̠t-Ma'in parents pass their language on to their children and prefer them to speak English or Hausa.
u̠t-Ma'in is also known as Ut-Main, ut-Ma'in, Fakanchi, Fakkanci or Fakai. Dialects include Kag, Jiir, Kur, Zuksun, Ror, Rer, Us and Koor. These dialects differ significantly from one another. u̠t-Ma'in can be written with the Latin alphabet, and parts of the Bible have been translations into the language.
