Wichí Lhamtés Güisnay (Wiznay)

Wichí Lhamtés Güisnay is a Matacoan language spoken by about 26,500 people in northern Argentina, particularly along the Picomayo River in Salta Province.

The language is also called Wiznay, Güisnay, Mataco, Mataco Güisnay, Mataco Pilcomayo or Wichí Lhamtés. It is closely related to Wichí Lhamtés Vejoz and Wichí Lhamtés Nocten. They are known collectively as Wichí languages, and are considered dialects of one language by some.

There are several ways to write Wichí Lhamtés Güisnay with the Latin alphabet. The one shown here was developed by Wichí people with help from linguists. It has been approved by members of many different Wichí communities. There are some regional variations in spelling (also shown). There is a translation of the Bible in this language.
