Kebu (Kǝkpǝǝkǝ)

Kebu is a member of the Kwa branch of the Atlantic-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 86,000 in Ghana and Togo, particulary in the Akebou District in the northwest of the Plateux Region in southern Togo, and in the prefectures of Agou and Wawa in eastern Ghana.

Kebu is also known as Kabu, Akebu or Akebou. Kebu speakers call their language Kǝkpǝǝkǝ and themselves Ǝkpǝǝpǝ. It is closely related to Animere, a Kwa language spoken in eastern Ghana.

There are ways to write Kebu with the Latin alphabet, and it is used to some extent in education, literature and the media.

Translation

We, the Akebou, are a people of approximately 73,830 speakers. We live in southern Togo, on the border with Ghana. Located in the Plateaux Region, Akebou country is one of the wettest areas of Togo, with a rainy season lasting more than seven months. We and our language are often known as 'Akebou,' but we call ourselves Ǝkpǝǝpǝ and our language Kǝkpǝǝkǝ.
