Tadaksahak is a member of the Northern Songhay branch of the Nilosaharan language family. It is spoken by about 170,000 people in Mali and Niger. In particular, it is spoken in the Ménaka Cercle of the Ménaka Region, and in the Ansongo Cercle of the Gao Region in the southeast of Mali, and in nearby parts of eastern Niger.
Tadaksahak is also known as Daoussahak, Dausahaq, which are versions of the Tuareg name for Tadaksahak speakers: Dăwsăhak. Tadaksahak speakers call their language Tadáksahak and themselves Idáksahak / إدكصهك. The language is influenced by Tuareg languages such as Tamasheq and Tamajaq.
There are ways to write Tadaksahak with the Latin and Arabic scripts. A dictionary of Tadaksahak was published in 1995. The orthography used was revised in 2000. Since then a grammar and various religious works have been published.
