Ancash Quechua (Anqas Qichwa)

Ancash Quechua is a Central Quechua language spoken by about 173,000 people in the Department of Ancash in the northwest of Peru, in particular in the provinces of Caraz, Carhuaz, and Huaraz. It is spoken by people of all ages who live at higher elevations. Elsewhere it is spoken mainly by adults. It is taught in primary schools, and used in the media.

Ancash Quechua is also known Huaylas Ancash Quechua, Llaqwash Kichwa, Huaylay, Waylay, Nunashimi or Runa Shimi. Dialects include Huaraz, Yungay and Huailas.

Ancash Quechua was first written in a vocabulary list of Catholic priests in 1905. A translation of the Gospel of John in was published in 1947. Since then a number of collections of tales, myths and other literature in Ancash Quechua have been published.

The Ministry of Education of Peru set up a way to write Quechua languages in 1975 called the Alfabeto Básico General del Quechua (General Basic Alphabet of Quechua). This was modified in 1985, and again in 2014, when separate alphabets for different Quechua languages were created. There is still some variation in how it is written.
