Ripuarian (Ripoarėsch)

Ripuarian is a variety of Central Franconian spoken in central Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium by about 900,000 people. It is spoken in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, in Liège in Belgium, and in Limburg the Netherlands.

Ripuarian, which also known is Ripuarian Franconian or Ripuarisch Platt, has over 100 dialects, the best-known of which is Kölsch, which is spoken in Cologne (Köln). It is related to the Moselle Franconian languages of southern Rhineland, to Luxembourgish, to Limburgish, and to Low Dietsch, which is spoken in Belgium.

There is some literature and some poems and songs written in Ripuarian, however there is no standard written form of the language. Attempts have been made to develop an orthography for Kölsch, however few people use it.

The name Ripuarian means "shore dwellers" and comes from the Latin rīpa (river bank, shore).
