Hanga (Haŋa)

Hanga is a member of the Northern Gur branch of the Niger-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 10,000 people in northern Ghana, particularly in and around the town of Damongo in the West Gonja Municipal District in the Savannah Region.

Hanga is also known as Anga, and Hanga speakers call it Haŋa. Dialects include Northern Hanga and Southern Hanga. It is closely related to Dagaare and Frafra. Hanga is written with the Latin script, taught in some schools, and there is a Hanga translation of the Bible.

Bunso zaa piiligu, Naawunni n daa n maalini saazu ni tiŋŋa.
Tiŋŋa maa daa n niŋini binyoo, ka ligu ni koom paali u, Naawunni sii poli n jinna koom maa.
Niŋi n na, Naawun yeli, “Cheli paaligu ta.” Lala mi niŋi.

Translation (English)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
