Lukpa is a member of the Southern Gur branch of the Atlantic-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 160,000 people in Benin and Togo. In particular, it is spoken in Bassila and Ouaké in the Donga Department, and in Tchaourou in the south of Borgou Department in central Benin, and in Kemerida in Bimah Prefecture in the Kara Region in the northeast of Togo.
Lukpa is also known as Legba, Logba, Lugba, Lokpta or Dompago. It is written with the Latin alphabet using a spelling system based on L’Alphabet des langues nationales (The Alphabet of National Languages) of Benin, which was created in 1975. It is officially recognised as a minority language in Benin.
