Woods Cree (Nīhithawīwin / ᒐᐦᑭᐯᐦᐃᑲᓇ)

Woods Cree is a member of the Western Cree branch of the Algonquian language family. It is spoken in northern parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan in Canada. In 2016 there were 1,840 speakers of Woods Cree.

Woods Cree is written with both the Latin alphabet and the Cree syllabic script. University language programs and teacher training programs favour the Latin alphabet, and as a result, use of the syllabic script is declining. The syllabic script can be written with indication of long vowels (pointed) or without that indication (unpointed).
