Chiru (ꯆꯤꯔꯨ)

Chiru is a member of the Kuki-Chin-Naga branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by about 8,600 people in the states of Manipur, Assam and Nagaland in the northeast India. In particular, it is spoken in the Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts of Manipur, and in the Cachar district in the south of Assam.

Chiru is also known as Rem or Chiru-Kuki. is spoken mainly in homes and among the Chiru community. Most Chiru people speak other languages, such as Meitei, Hmar, Sylheti or Hindi, elsewhere. Chiru is officially recognised as a tribal language in Manipur.

Older Chiru speakers tend to use the Metiti script to write their language, while younger Chiru speakers prefer the Latin / Roman script.
