Vute (Vɨ́tè)

Vute is a member of the Mambiloid branch of the Northern Bantoid language family. It is spoken by about 21,000 people mainly in Cameroon, and also in southeastern Nigeria. In particular, it is spoken in the Mayo-Banyo and Djérem departments in the southwest of the Adamawa Region in the north of Cameroon.

Other names for Vute include Babouté, Bamboute, Boute, Bute, Foute, Pute, Voute, Voutere, Woute, Wute, Vútè, Vouté and Vɨ́tè. Dialects include Eastern, Central and Doume. A standard orthography for Vute using the Latin script and based on the General Alphabet of Cameroonian Languages was created in 1979.
