This page should help you to recognise the words for No Smoking
in a variety of languages. These translations were compiled by
Victor Palermo, who started working on it in 1981 when he gave up
smoking, and who takes full responsibility for any inaccuracies,
grammatical errors or other mistakes.
Victor was inspired by a cartoon he saw (in 1949 or 1950) in the
Italian weekly puzzle magazine La Settimana Enigmistica.
The cartoon showed a waiting room where six or seven angry-looking
men in their typical ethnic attire are sitting and facing a 'No Smoking'
sign in their respective languages, while an African man is enjoying
his cigarette because the sign does not include Swahili, Hausa or
other African languages.
