Leonese (Llionés)

Leonese is a Western Ibero-Romance language spoken in northwestern Spain and northeastern Portuguese by about 25,000 people. In Spain it is spoken in the provinces of León, Zamora and Salamanca, which correspond the the northern and western parts of the historical region of León. In Portugual it is spoken in the parishes of Aveleda e Rio de Onor (Ruidenore) and São Julião de Palácios e Deilão (San Xulian de Palácius i Deilon) in Bragança District

Native names for Leonese include Llionés, Ḷḷionés and Lionés. Leonese has no offical status but has some protection in the autonomous commuity of Castile and León. It is classified as part of the Asturleonese linguistic group, along with Asturian, is part of a dialect continuum with Asturian and Mirandese, and is closely related to Galician. Asturian and Leonese have been considered varities of one language, known as Astur-Leonese, Asturian-Leonese or Asutrian, for a long time.

Varieties of Leonese spoken in Portugual are known collectively as Riunorese Leonese, Riunorese or Lhionês Riunorês. They have their own orthography based on Portuguese spelling which differs somewhat from the orthographies used in Spain. For example, the sound represented by ch in Spain [ʧ] is written tch in Portugal, and x [ʃ] is written ch.

Leonese was used as the literary and administrative language of the Kingdom of León during the 12th and 13th centuries. After that, it was gradually replaced by Castiian as a written language. Literature in Leonese began to appear again in the 20th century.
