Romagnol (rumagnôl)

Romagnol is a Romance language spoken by about 430,000 people mainly in the southeast of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is also spoken in the Marche region of Italy, and in San Marino. The language is classified as definitely endangered as it is spoken mainly by adults and is not being passed on to children.

Dialects of Romagnol include Ravennate, Forlivese, Faentino, Cesenate, Riminese and Sammarinese. It is closely related Emilian, Piedmontese, Ligurian and Lombard, and there is some mutual intelligibility between these languages.

Romagnol first appeared in writing in Sonetto romagnolo, a collection of poems by Bernadino Catti printed in 1502. These poems are written in a mixture of Italian and Romagnol. The first Romagnol-Italian dictionary was published in 1840. During the 20th century, a number of plays, poems and books were published in Romagnol.

There is no standard spelling system for Romagnol. Instead, each writer has developed their own way to write the language.
