Komering is a member of the Lampungic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 470,000 people in the Indonesian provinces of Lampung and South Sumatra in the south of Sumatra island. It is particularly spoken in the regencies of Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan, Ogan Komering Ulu Timur, Ogan Komering Ulu and Ogan Ilir in South Sumatra province along the Komering river.
Komering is also known as Kumoring. Dialects include: Upstream Komering, Downstream Komering, Komering, Kayu Agung Asli and Kayu Agung. Komering is closely related to Lampung Api and is classified as a dialect of Lampung in some sources.
There are ways to write Komering with the Latin and Arabic (Jawi) alphabets. There is also a traditional script for Komering similar to the Lampung and Rejang scripts.
e, f, q, v and x are only used in loanwords and foreign names.
