Bushong (Bushɔ́ɔ́ng)

Bushong is a Bantu language spoken by about 160,000 Bushongo people in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly in the Mweka Territory, north of Ilebo, and between the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in the north of Kasai Province, an area historically known as the Kuba Kingdom.

Bushong is also known as Bushongo, Bushoong, Busoong, Shongo, Ganga, Kuba, Mbale, Bamongo or Mongo. Dialects include Djembe, Ngende, Ngombe and Ngongo. It is closely related to Shuwa / Pianga, which was formerly considered a dialect of Bushong.

Bushong was first documented in the late 19th century. The first grammar and dictionary of the language was published in 1932. There are several ways to write it with the Latin script.
