Lomwe is a Bantu language with about 2.5 million people in northern Mozambique and southern Malawi. In Mozambique it is spoken particularly in the Alto Molocue, Gule, Gurue and Ile districts of Zambezia Province, and also in the Malema, Ribáuè, Murrupula and Moma districts in Nampula Province. In Malawi it is spoken particularly the Mulanje and Thyolo districts in the Southern Region.
Lomwe is also known as Lomue, Mihawani, Ngulu, Nguru, Western Makua or Western Makhuwa. The variety of Lomwe spoken in Malawi is known as Malawian Lomwe, Anguru, Nguru, Elomwe or Elhomwe, and is officially recognised as a minority language in Malawi. The Malawi variety of Lomwe is not mutually intelligible with Lomwe varieties spoken in Mozambique.
Lomwe is written with the Latin script, and there is a translation of the Bible in the language.
