Kilivila (Kiriwina)

Kilivila is a Western Oceanic language spoken in the Trobriand Islands in the southeast of Papua New Guinea. It is spoken by about 20,000 people mainly in the Kiriwana (Kilivila) islands, particularly Kiriwana, Vakuta, Kitava, Kaile'una, Kuiawa and Munuwata, in the Kiriwina-Goodenough District of the Milne Bay Province. There are also speakers of Kilivila in the nearby Marshall Bennet Islands and Lusancay Islands.

Kilivila is also known as Kiriwana or Boyowa. Dialects include Kilivila, Kuboma, Kavataria and Luba, which are spoken in northern Kiriwana; Kaibwagina, which is spoken in the south of Kiriwana; Yeiwau, which is spoken mainly on Vakuta Island south of Kiriwana; Kaileua, which is spoken on Kaileua Island west of Kiriwana, and Kitava, which is spoken on Kitava Island east of Kiriwana. The dialects differ mainly in pronunciation and are mutually intelligible.

The Kilivila dialect has the most speakers, however the Kavataria dilaect (kaigi Kavataria) is preferred for literary purposes and education. It was first written in 1894, and is used for the Kilivila translation of the Bible.
