Basahan Basahan

The Basahan script is an abugida or syllabic alphabet that was used to write the Bikol languages, a group Central Philippine languages spoken mainly in the Bicol Peninsula in Luzon in the Philippines. It is version of Baybayin script and developed from it.

It was used before the Spanish conquest of the Philippines in the 1570s, after which it was gradually replaced by the Latin alphabet. The Basahan script was used to some extent until the mid-19th century, and is still used for decorative purposes.

The Basahan script is also known as Guhit or Súrat Bikolnon or Surat Basahan. In Central Bikol it is known as Iskriturang Basahan.
