Katë (كمكاتاويرى)

Katë is a member of the Nuristani branch of the Indo-Iranian language family. It is spoken by about 150,000 people in the Hindu Kush mountains mainly in Afghanistan, and also in Pakistan. In particular, it is spoken in the provinces of Nuristan (نورستان) and Kunar (کونړ) in eastern Afghanistan, and in the Lower Chitral District in northern Pakistan.

Katë is also known as Kati, Kamkata-vari, Kâmkata-vari or Kâmkata-mumkṣta-vari. Katë speakers call their language (y)imú vëri, yimó vëri or yimó viri, all of which mean (“our language”), or Katë́vëri (“Katë speech”). In Pakistan it's know as Šexānī (Shekhani).

Dialects of Katë include Western Katë, Northeastern Katë, and Southeastern Katë (including Kamviri and Mumviri). Some sources classify these dialects as separate languages.

Until recently, Katë was mainly an oral language, however there are ways to write it with the Arabic script. An offical orthography using the Arabic script and based on Persian and Pashto spelling conventions was proposed the the Afghan Academy of Sciences in the 1980s. This has not been widely adopted by Katë writers, who prefer their own spelling systems.
