Marcomannic Runes Marcomannic Runes

Marcomannic Runes is a Rune-like alphabet that appears in De Inventione Litterarum, a treatise ascribed to Hrabanus Maurus (780-856 AD), a Frankish Benedictine monk, theologian, poet, encyclopedist and writer. It is known from manuscripts dating from the 8th and 9th centuries from the south of the Carolingian Empire (Bavaria in southern Germany). The description of the script is as follows:

Litteras quippe quibus utuntur Marcommani, quos nos Nordmannos vocamus, infra scriptas habemus : a quibus originem, qui Theodiscam loquuntur linguam, trahunt. Cum quibus carmina sua incantationesque ac divinationes significare procurant qui adhuc paganis ritbus involvuntur.
We have set out below the characters used by the Marcomanni—whom we call Northmen—from whom those who speak the Germanic language trace their origin. With these characters, those who are still bound by pagan rites seek to record their songs, incantations, and divinations.

The Marcomanni were a Germanic tribe who lived north of the River Danube on the border of the Roman Empire. They are mentioned in Roman records from between 60 BC and 400 AD. The script has nothing to do with the Marcomanni, however was devised by Carolingian scholars as a way to represent the letters of the Latin alphabet with runic equivalents from Elder Futhark and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.
