Jumli (जुम्ली खस)

Jumli is a member of the Eastern Pahari branch of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is spoken by about 40,000 people mainly in Karnali Province in northeastern Nepal, particularly in the Jumla, Dolpa, Kalikot, Mugu and Humla districts. In the past it was considered a dialect of Nepali, however it is now officially recognised as a separate language by the Nepali government.

Jumli is also known as Jumli Khas. Dialects include Asi Darali, which is spoken in the Jumla district; Tribikoti, which is spoken in the Jumla and Dolpa districts; Rasakoti, which is spoken in the Kalikot district, and Muhu, which is spoken in the Mugu and Humla districts.

A way to write Jumli with the Devanagari alphabet was introduced in 2017. A modified version was adopted by the Language Commission of Nepal in 2022. The language has been taught in some schools in the Jumla District since 2020, and a dictionary is being produced.
