Kagate (स्युबा)

Kagate is a member of the Tibetic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by about 1,500 people mainly in the Ramechhap district in the south of Bagmati Province in eastern Nepal. There are also Kagate speakers in Kathmandu, and in Darjeeling in northern India. The language is spoken by people of all ages.

Kagate is also known as Shuba, Shyuba, Syuba or Syuwa. These names mean 'paper maker', and refer to a common occupation of the Kagate / Syuba people. Kagate speakers generally call their language and themselves स्युबा (syubā). Kagate is closely related to Yolmo, which is spoken in nearby areas.

There are ways to write Kagate with the Devanagari and Latin alphabets.
